Boudoir Chic: Fall looks stolen from the lingerie drawer

Regardless of what undergarments you currently own, consider it wise to invest in some new lingerie this Fall. There will be a distinct difference, however, from the kind you wear in the bedroom - you’ll be wearing this lingerie out of the house.

Lingerie-inspired looks popped up all over the runways for Fall 09. Whether it was inspired by corseting and boning structure like Alexander McQueen’s orange and black quilted jacket, or sexy lace like Collette Dinnigan, it’s clear that underwear belongs on the outside this season. For Collette Dinnigan, sheer panels of delicate black lace run straight through the center of her sheer tops and dresses, perfectly daring for a seductive cocktail hour. Jill Stuart and Dolce & Gabbana also created versions of a lacey black nightie-turned-dress, and Jill Stuart’s is worn with a sleek black leather jacket. Stella McCartney plays with slip dresses on her runway this season, using layers of lace and shiny color-blocked satin. Bottega Veneta uses the look of a simple slip to create a toast-colored slinky dress with beautiful slip-inspired gather details at the bust and waist. ADAM pops a bright satin corset with a navy silk jacket and matching pant for a new take on the pantsuit. Also playing with corseting is Dolce & Gabbana with their heavily structured corset dress with contrast boning details. Christian Dior eludes to the taboo pinup girls of the 1920s with a brilliant royal purple dress with layers of sheer pleats and an intricate neckline detail. Also inspired by historic undergarments is Diesel Black Gold, whose camisole and slip skirt look closely resembles those worn in the 1940s.

Not comfortable wearing just your skivvies? Behnaz Sarafpour juxtaposes a black strapless bra shape over a very modest gray tweed shift dress. In other words, kind of like wearing your underwear over your clothes rather than underneath.
